J. Cole Reflects on the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar Feud and His Role in the Drama
In a candid series of interviews following his unexpected withdrawal from a much-anticipated rap battle, J. Cole has finally addressed the ongoing tension between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The Dreamville leader opened up about his controversial decision to step back and the emotional aftermath that followed.
Why J. Cole Apologized to Kendrick Lamar
During an in-depth conversation with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis about his latest album The Fall-Off, Cole revealed the moment he chose to apologize to Kendrick for his now-removed diss track “7 Minute Drill.” He explained that the realization struck him just an hour before performing at Dreamville Fest.
“I felt a sudden shift – a lightness and excitement – after days of intense stress,” Cole shared. “I realized I had misrepresented myself by fueling division and negativity toward someone I respect deeply.”
This internal conflict left him feeling “miserable” and compelled him to make amends. His wife’s emotional reaction underscored the weight of the situation, as she witnessed how much the tension affected him in the days leading up to his public apology.
Facing Backlash and Personal Doubts
Despite standing by his decision, Cole acknowledged the harsh criticism he faced for extending an olive branch to Kendrick. The backlash challenged his confidence and reputation, forcing him to confront fears of being “done” in the industry.
“The world didn’t care about the relief I felt after apologizing; they attacked my name and legacy,” he admitted. “It was tough to ignore the constant negative videos and messages questioning my well-being.”
Current Dynamics with Drake and Kendrick
In a separate sit-down with Cam’ron, which also addressed their unusual legal dispute, J. Cole discussed his present relationship with both Drake and Kendrick Lamar. While he expressed genuine affection for both artists, he noted that communication has been limited.
“I love these guys, but we haven’t been talking much. I’m not sure where they stand,” Cole said. “Sometimes I want to reach out, but even saying that feels a bit awkward.”
The Divisive Impact of the 2024 Rap Battle
Cole expressed disappointment over how the rivalry polarized fans, likening it to political partisanship. He criticized the harsh treatment Drake endured after the battle, describing it as a deliberate campaign to undermine his legacy.
“It became a ‘pick a side’ scenario, which is disheartening,” he remarked. “People used the battle to air long-held grievances or to tear Drake down unfairly.”
Respect for Kendrick’s Triumph and Support for Drake’s Future
While celebrating Kendrick’s remarkable achievements post-battle – including his Super Bowl performance and Grammy wins – Cole also sympathized with Drake’s struggles amid the backlash.
“Seeing Kendrick’s success makes me proud, but I also feel for Drake and how the world has turned on him,” Cole said. “At the same time, I’m rooting for Iceman to blow up.”
