Black Thought and Mach-Hommy Unite for a Groundbreaking Album
Two of hip-hop’s most formidable lyricists, Black Thought and Mach-Hommy, are set to collaborate on a full-length project that promises to shake the rap landscape.
Announcement and Anticipation
Mach-Hommy recently revealed this exciting collaboration in his latest newsletter, sharing with fans: “I have a few projects in the pipeline: one with August Fanon, another with Ras G … and last but certainly not least, Black-Hommy.” While the release date and further specifics remain confidential, anticipation is already building among their fanbases.
Origins of the Collaboration
The duo initially hinted at working together during a 2024 interview with Pigeons & Planes. Black Thought expressed the importance of finding a collaborator who matches his intensity: “Sometimes I send cats’ verses back because it’s like, I don’t believe it enough. So when you find somebody that’s on that same type time, it’s going to best serve the culture for y’all to collab. So I think we’re probably gonna continue to build.” Mach-Hommy responded enthusiastically, “Oh yeah, we’re building, I got a folder for you.”
Showcasing Their Synergy
Their dynamic chemistry has already been showcased on tracks like “Copy Cold” from Mach-Hommy’s 2024 album #RICHAXXHAITIAN. Additionally, they collaborated on Your Old Droog’s 2020 track “Pravda,” which also featured El-P and Tha God Fahim, highlighting their ability to blend seamlessly with other top-tier artists.
Behind the Scenes of “Copy Cold”
Mach-Hommy shared the backstory of “Copy Cold” with Pigeons & Planes, revealing that the song was conceived nearly a decade ago. He explained, “I made this song like a decade ago … and the inner voice is like ‘Black Thought.’ And then the rational mind is like, ‘fuck outta here.’ So I put it away, because that’s never gonna happen. Then 10 years later I’ve got Black Thought in my phone, talking about some, ‘Where’s the record? When are we gonna cook?’” This anecdote underscores the organic nature of their partnership and mutual respect.
Mutual Respect and Recognition
Black Thought has openly praised Mach-Hommy’s artistry. On the Questlove Supreme podcast in 2023, he named Mach-Hommy among five rappers deserving wider acclaim. “That’s my ace,” Black Thought said. “I think he’s one of those ones. Someone who understands a sensibility of, you know, a person who’s been around since the ’90s, but who also still feels cutting edge. I think his association with the whole Griselda family and that movement, but the way that he’s distinctly different, is huge too.”
Upcoming Projects and Future Outlook
If Black-Hommy is released as planned, it will mark Mach-Hommy’s first album since 2024’s #RICHAXXHAITIAN, while Black Thought’s latest work remains 2023’s Glorious Game with El Michels Affair. Additionally, Black Thought appears to be preparing a follow-up to his acclaimed 2022 collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Danger Mouse, the sequel to Cheat Codes.
Impact on Hip-Hop Culture
This collaboration between two veterans known for their intricate lyricism and cultural awareness is poised to make a significant impact on the genre. With hip-hop evolving rapidly, projects like Black-Hommy highlight the genre’s ability to blend tradition with innovation, offering fans a fresh yet authentic experience.
