Sprite has officially launched their Black student relations campaign in their battle for 1.5 Million dollars in their “Sprite Step-Off” step competition. They go from California to Texas to Chi-town to New York City hosting smaller qualifying competitions looking for the top teams in each region. They’ve come up with three teams to represent the fraternities and three to rep the sororities.
MTV 2 aired the first episode Sunday night hosted by Ludacris. The six organizations featured in the joint were Alphas, Kappas and Sigmas for the guys and AKAs, Deltas and Zeta Tau Alpha whom affectionately refer to themselves as “The Zetas” for the women. If that isn’t controversial enough, I don’t know what is. Somebody on that Sprite/MTV panel should’ve known not to let them white girls refer to themselves as such. I know every Zeta under the sun was up in arms!
Saturday night Sprite called every New York Greek to the Roseland Ballroom to watch the New York version of the preliminaries. A friend of mine told me it was kind of dry but I wasn’t there to witness myself. Besides I didn’t receive ONE TEXT all weekend asking if the Nupes were in the building. Not to toot our own horns, but if Diamond Konnection doesn’t assemble to cold rock a party, chances are it wasn’t that poppin. I mean, my young boys even group together to tear down “Step Correct.”
Spike launched the whole black Greek media movement with “School Daze,” one of my favorite flicks of all time. Then they did some kind of variation, trying to capture the same feeling with “Drumline.” #EPICFAIL. Luckily, “Stomp The Yard” did a good job in preventing mainstream Black Greek flat line. There was a couple in between here and there but nothing worth mentioning. Truth be told, Stomp The Yard 2 will be in theatres very soon.
BET’s College Hill had their fair share of Black Greek Lettered Organization (BGLO) members but it wasn’t really centered around them. In the near future, be sure to expect a reality show called, “For The Love of Kappa” starring your very own Diamond Konnection Nupes out of New York, executive produced byyours truly.
