DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY INC. was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University by 22 dynamic undergraduate women. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide to the needy. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to promote human welfare. Delta Sigma Theta has a membership of over 200,000 predominately African-American college educated women. The Sorority currently has over 850 chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, Haiti, the Bahamas, the Republic of Korea and the Virgin Islands. The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Thrust which is as follows: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness, Involvement Physical and Mental Health Political Awareness and Involvement. Program Development and Implementation in Delta is a cooperative function with several committees and executive board involved. Those with direct leadership responsibilities for implementation include members of the Program, Planning, and Development Committee, Social Action Committee, Membership Services and Regional Officers. A brief listing of the selected national program areas are as follows: Delta Habitat for Humanity Summit III: Preparing our Sons for Manhood School America Delta Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and AIDS Community Education Project (ADACE) Black College Convocation Distinguished Professor Endowed Chair Delta Days at the Nation’s Capitol Young Artists Renaissance Gala.
Here is a partial listing of some of the sorority’s most famous members
Aretha Franklin – Soror Franklin has rocked America for the past three decades and has generated 17 number-one songs. No wonder she is known as “The Queen of Soul”.
Carol Moseley-Braun – Soror Braun made history by being the first black woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992. She Currently serves for the State of Illinois.
Wilma Rudolph – Soror Wilma Rudolph was the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympiad. Before she died, she served as Track Director and Special Consultant on Minority Affairs at DePaww University.
Betty Shabazz – Before her untimely death in 1997, Soror Dr. Betty Shabazz was the Director of Communications and public Relations for Medger Evers College of the city University of New York. She was also widely recognized as the widow of Malcolm X.
Niara Sudarkasa – Soror Sudarkasa made history by becoming the first woman president of Lincoln University, America’s oldest historically Black college. Prior to he appointment at Lincoln, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to receive tenure at the University of Michigan.
Alexa Canady, M.D. – At age 26 became the first Black women neurosurgeon in the United States. She specializes in pediatric neurosurgery.
Natalie Cole -This beautiful, soulful jazz/pop/R&B/Urban Contemporary singer is the daughter of the late Nat “King” Cole and is just as successful today as her legendary father.
Erika Dunlap – 2004 Miss America
Roberta Flack – Singer of ” Killing Me Softly with His Song” She just recently perform a duet at the 2010 Grammys with R&B Soulster Maxwell. Perfection.
Frankie Muse Freeman – Civil rights attorney; First woman to be appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights (1964 to 1979)
