Kobe Bryant vs Michael Jordan: Who Was The Better Player? [Video]

For those born in the late 1980’s, early 1990’s Michael Jordan was like a god on the court for us. He made plays no one else could see, and did things we could only dream of.

We all wanted to be like Mike.

Those born in the mid-1990’s saw things a little differently. They learned of Michael Jordan’s greatness while watching a late 30’s, early 40’s version of himself as a member of the Washington Wizards.

Meanwhile, during that time another player started to make a name for himself. His name is Kobe Bryant.

We always compare the two and ask ourselves who was the better player? When know that Jordan’s influence off the court and what he did to NBA cannot be matched. But what they did in competition is another debate in itself.

Let’s see what they did against each other when the two got to play:

12/17/1996 – Jordan: 30 points, 3 assists, 9 rebounds in 47 minutes.

Bryant: 5 points, 1 rebound in 10 minutes played.

2/5/1997 – Jordan: 27 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal in 40 minutes.

Bryant: 5 points, 3 rebounds in 13 minutes played.

12/17/1997 – Jordan: 36 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal in 35 minutes.

Bryant: 20 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds & 2 steals in 29 minutes played.

12/17/1997 – Jordan: 36 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal in 35 minutes.

Bryant: 33 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds & 2 steals in 29 minutes played.

2/1/1998 – Jordan: 31 points, 2 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal in 37 minutes.

Bryant: 20 points, 4 assists, 1 rebounds & 2 steals in 26 minutes played.

2/12/2002 – Jordan: 22 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steal in 41 minutes.

Bryant: 23 points, 15 assists, 11 rebounds & 1 steals in 43 minutes played.

4/2/2002 – Jordan: 2 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds  in 12 minutes.

Bryant: 14 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds & 1 steals in 33 minutes played.

11/8/2002 – Jordan: 25 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steal in 30 minutes.

Bryant: 27 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds & 2 steals in 38 minutes played.

3/28/2002 – Jordan: 25 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steal in 41 minutes.

Bryant: 23 points, 4 assists, 0 rebounds & 1 steals in 41 minutes played.

In those eight games Jordan’s record against Kobe is 3-5.

I’m not saying Kobe Bryant is the better player, although I believe he is/was the better shooter. I just think that it’s incredible that we fail to celebrate Kobe Bryant as the true heir to “His Airness” as he essentially dominated for a couple years. He should definitely still be in the discussion, no matter how incredibly great Jordan was.

Bryant is about to be 36. His last really good year was 2012-13 where he averaged 27.3 ppg, 6 steals, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He was 34.

To compare Jordan had already retired at this point, with three seasons of rest before jumping back in at age 38, and no serious injury.

He averaged 22.9 points, 5.2 assists and 7 rebounds per game during his comeback year.

Jordan has six rings. Kobe has five.

Both lead by none other than Phil Jackson.

Watch the video below and watch the on the court similarities blow your mind. Then tell us who you think is the better, or are they just as equal on the court.
