Our sincerest condolences & prayers goes out Irizarry family.
The pilot of the 1972 Piper Cherokee was having trouble with the plane and made a distress call to Venice Municipal Airport at 2:45 p.m., shortly before crash-landing on Caspersen Beach. A woman from the airport informed officials that the pilot would not be able to make it to the airport and planned to land on the beach.
The pilot, Karl Kokomoor, 57, and his passenger, David Theen, 60, were not injured. Irizarry’s 9-year-old daughter was seriously injured by the plane. Irizarry and his daughter were walking on the beach when the plane crashed. He was killed at the scene while his daughter was critically injured by debris from the plane. She was airlifted to a children’s hospital in St. Petersburg.
izarry was an Army sergeant stationed in Georgia. A family friend told the Associated Press that he was a “great, hands-on father” to his three children. The family was scheduled to be stationed in Alaska.
