Tony Dungy Tries To Clean Up His Michael Sam Comments On The Dan Patrick Show [Video]
This morning former Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Tony Dungy called into the Dan Patrick Show to clean up his comments against Michael Sam who happens to be the first openly gay football player.
After saying he wouldn’t “want the distraction” in drafted Sam to a team he was coached on, he explained that it wasn’t simply because of his sexual orientation, but moreso that he did not want all the media coverage that came with having him on the team. He also compared the situation to a Tim Tebow or Johnathan Martin, who would also have a high level of scrutiny and popularity joining the league.
“I had the same kind of comments when we did the piece on Jonathan Martin and I talked to some general managers and they said that Jonathan definitely had the talent to play in the league, but would they want the distraction of everybody following the story and people asking their players over and over ‘what’s going on with Jonathan?’…And because of the fact that they didn’t view him as a difference maker, they probably wouldn’t want the distractions. “
Honestly, I would like to see a televised interview between Tony Dungy and Michael Sam on NBC’s Football Night in America. It could bring to the forefront a great conversation from two men with different point of views on how to live… life.
