Over 100 Harlem Gang Members Indicted In Huge Conspiracy Case Surrounding 2011 Slaying Of 18 Yr Old Basketball Star [Photo]

More than 100 Harlem gang members have been indicted in a massive conspiracy case surrounding the 2011 slaying of an 18-year-old high school hoops star, sources said. The probe revolves around the deadly rivalry between crews from the Manhattanville and neighboring Grant Houses, which straddle Amsterdam Ave. near W. 125th St.

An arrest sweep with police choppers and about 400 cops is expected to rock the troubled developments early Wednesday morning. Dozens of the charged gang members will face first-degree conspiracy counts on which they’ll potentially face decades in prison. Their arraignments are expected to begin Thursday in Manhattan Supreme Court.

At separate trials, Robert Cartagena 23, and Tyshawn Brockington, 24, were convicted of killing nationally-ranked Murry Bergtraum point guard Tayshana “Chicken” Murphy, although it was never made clear which pulled the trigger. They are each serving 25 years to life in prison.

A joint Manhattan District Attorney and NYPD gang unit investigation has led to conspiracy, conspiracy to commit murder and other serious charges involving two killings and 20 additional shootings, sources told the Daily News.
The battle between the housing projects has raged on, with incidents occurring as recently as this past weekend. The investigation covers warfare before and after the slaying of Murphy, gunned down in her own building as she begged for mercy on Sept. 10, 2011.
