US Senators Urge NFL To Change ‘Redskins’ Name

50 United States senators sent a letter to the Washington Redskins and its NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, urging the team to change the name of the team, in which is offensive to native americans.

The letter read as follows.

“Today, we urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports,” the letter said. “It’s time for the NFL to endorse a name change for the Washington, D.C. football team.

“The despicable comments made by Mr. Sterling have opened up a national conversation about race relations. We believe this conversation is an opportunity for the NFL to take action to remove the racial slur from the name of one of its marquee franchises.”

The NFL has historically taken Snyder’s side saying that it is up to the team. I wonder if this will now change things a bit.

I think the U.S. senate has more important issues to worry about, but maybe that’s just me.
