Janelle Monae Honored At Havard College Women’s Center [Photo]

Singer Janelle Monae was awarded the inaugural 2014 Award for Achievement in Arts and Media by the Havard College Women’s Center on yesterday after headlining at Havard’s Yardfest 2014. This award seeks to acknowledge a prominent performer who tackles questions of identity including sex, gender and sexuality in their performances.

Janelle revealed that her signature black and white tuxedo stage outfit is her paying homage to when she was a maid. She also shared personal stories about her past including how her grandmother and her mother are credited for her success.

“Embrace the things that make you unique, even if it makes people uncomfortable,” she said.

The “Electric Lady” was also recognized as the 2014 Woman of the Black Men’s Forum at their 20th annual celebration of Black Women Gala.
