Colorado School Suspends Girl Who Shaved Her Head To Support Cancer-Stricken Friend [Details]

Kamryn Renfro, 9, who attends Caprock Academy in Grand Junction, CO was suspended after shaving her head in support of her friend, Delaney Clements, 11, who battles neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer.

The school took immediate action in sending Renfro home after she walked into her class with a bare head on Monday morning. According to the school board’s chairwoman, the school’s the dress code is designed to promote uniformity and a non-distracting environment, also saying exceptions can be made under extraordinary circumstances.

In a story broadcast on Denver television station KUSA, Kamryn said shaving her head “felt like the right thing to do…I did it so she didn’t have to feel left out.”

“People would sometimes call me a boy even though I was all dressed in pink,” said Delaney of her shaved head.

The board voted Tuesday night (3-1) to make Kamryn an exception. Renfro is now back in school.

“I was really excited that I would have somebody to support me and I wouldn’t be alone with people always laughing at me,” Delaney said. “I just want to say thank you for being a really good friend and actually being brave enough to do it, and not only caring about your hair.”
