Jets Continue to Make Moves and Cut Santonio Holmes [Video]
Moves are being made within the New York Jets organization with the release of wide receiver Santonio Holmes yesterday.
In the last 24 hours they have released two starters Holmes and defensive back Antonio Cromartie.
Releasing these two players has given the Jets $17 million dollars in cap space which allow for some wiggle room to hopefully pick up a big time free agent within the next few days.
As for the release to Holmes it was a long anticipated move according to ESPN.
Holmes in the beginning of his stint with the Jets was very much a big time play maker. His signature catch came in the playoffs against the New England Patriots in the fourth quarter which helped lead them to the AFC championship game in 2010. Check out the catch below.
As of late though injuries have plagued him and have lead to a severe lack of performance. In the last 43 games Holmes has had with the Jets he has only four 100 yard games.
Holmes was also some what of an instigant within the Jets locker room, his most infamous moment was his feud with Jets quarter back Mark Sanchez (who amy also get released soon) in 2011. Holmes lost so much respect after that feud that he lost his captain status the same year that he gained it.
According to ESPN.com, in an interview after the release of Holmes, Rex Ryan showed his appreciation to the wide receiver,
“I appreciate Tone’s contributions over the last four seasons,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “I’ve always admired his knack for making the clutch play. He’s a tremendous competitor who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. I wish him nothing but the best.”
Its been a long drop for Holmes who at one point was a Super Bowl MVP for the Pittsburg Steelers, but no one is safe in the NFL especially if you don’t perform.
