The Wire & Treme Writer David Simon To Pen HBO’s Martin Luther King Jr. Miniseries
David Simon, the creator of The Wire and Treme, is currently penning a new miniseries for HBO centered on civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
The six-hour miniseries is based on Taylor Branch book trilogy America: In the King Years covering the freedom rides, the Birmingham and Selma campaigns and King’s relationships with John F and Robert Kennedy and Lyndon B Johnson.
Deadline reports that Simon will write the first episode, and will see the show through to completion alongside his Treme co-creator Eric Overmyer. Also Oprah Winfrey has signed up as producer for the project, which also features the civil rights march in Washington that King was organizing when he was murdered.
