Congressman Threatens NFL Over Washington Redskins Nickname [Photo]
There are a lot of problems in this country. Poverty, Jobs, Healthcare etc.
Yet, two members of congress have sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, formally calling for a name change to the now controversial Washington Redskins name.
According to ESPN, Washington Democrat Senator Maria Cantwell, who is chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and Oklahoma Republican Representative Tom Cole, who is a member of the Chickasaw Tribe, both added their two cents on what has become a pressing issue in the NFL.
To apply some pressure to the cause, and possibly some limelight to the issue Cantwell threatened to take away some of the NFL’s tax breaks as punishment according to the New York Times.
“You’re getting a tax break for educational purposes, but you’re still embracing a name that people see as a slur and encouraging it,”
Goodell has denied speaking in detail about the issue in the past while leaving the decision to owner Dan Snyder of the Redskins, who has refused to entertain any name change.
