This Day In Sports: The Rock vs. Mankind (Halftime Heat) [Full Match] [Video]
While almost 64 million viewers were watching Super Bowl XXXIII against the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons, the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) had a plan to take some of those viewers, some who probably weren’t too excited seeing Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder & Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, in one of the most creative matches in its history.
The match too place in an empty America West Arena in Phoenix, Arizona and was dubbed the “Empty Arena Match” for the WWF Championship.
Mankind faced his rival the “Corporate Champion” The Rock in the match while Vince McMahon returned to do the broadcasting for the title match.
This was a rematch of the controversial “I Quit” match between the two wrestlers at the Royal Rumble in 1999, where Rock smashed Mankind with countless chair shots before a recording over the loud speaker with Foley’s voice yelled out “I Quit,” before the match ended.
The match-up between the two was awarded the highest rating in “Sunday Night Heat” history with a 6.6 rating.
