NFL Admits Mistake Cost Team Chance At Playoffs [Video]
We thought the NFL would be a better place after the replacement referees left the game.
And in a lot of ways it is. But this BIG mistake cost one team not only the game, where robbed them at a chance to make the playoffs on the last game of the season.
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop with the game on the line was setting for a game winning field goal with four seconds on the line. The ball was snapped, the kick was off, and… he missed it.
San Diego Chargers had an illegal defensive formation on the play, a formation which probably impacted the kick itself.
In a statement by the NFL,
“On the play, San Diego lined up with seven men on one side of the snapper. This should have been penalized as an illegal formation by the defense. The NFL Rule Book states that ‘No more than six Team B players may be on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper at the snap.’ The rule was adopted this year as a player safety measure.
Why is the non call such a big deal? If Succop had a chance to to kick a shorter field goal at 36 yards and if he would have made it, and the Chiefs won the game, the Pittsburgh Steelers would have made the playoffs instead of the San Diego Chargers.
