What a way to end a night of holiday celebration… Jose Miranda, 49, and his brother, Gregorio Miranda-Cruz, had just returned to their Bushwick apartment on Christmas Eve, after a night of drinking. Miranda was playing with a 9 mm handgun from his dresser as he looked for some clothes when it went off, officials said. The bullet hit his brother.
NY Daily News reports; ’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the room, an armed creature was stirring — then something went boom.
A drunken Brooklyn man playing with a gun shot his younger brother in the hip on Christmas Eve and then tried to dump the smoking pistol on a neighbor, officials said Thursday.
“Take this,” boozed-up shooter Jose Miranda, 49, told his upstairs neighbor on Tuesday after shooting younger brother Gregorio Miranda-Cruz, 48, according to court papers. “I screwed up and made a mistake.”
The two brothers had just returned to their apartment on Belvidere St. near Broadway in Bushwick around 11:30 p.m. after a night of drinking. Law enforcement sources said a soused Miranda pulled a Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun from his dresser as he looked for some clean clothes.
Miranda told police he was aiming the gun at his bedroom wall when it went off, according to court papers. The bullet pierced Miranda-Cruz’s hip, nicked his bladder and lower intestine and exited his stomach.
Authorities said Miranda immediately ran upstairs and tried to hand the gun to neighbor Jonathan Espinosa, 28. Espinosa wouldn’t take it, but Miranda left the loaded weapon on his neighbor’s stove before fleeing, officials said.
“He was panicked,” said Espinosa, who wouldn’t comment on the gun. “You can tell when a person is nervous (and) anxious. He told me ‘Please, do me a favor, call the cops.’ ”
Paramedics rushed Miranda-Cruz to Kings County Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
