Nelly Questions If Tip Drill Protest Was More Important Then Saving His Sister [Video]

In 2003 Nelly’s sister Jacqueline Donahue was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, causing the southern rapper to launch a “Jes Us 4 Jackie” campaign in order to find a bone marrow donor that could potentially have saved her life.

In 2004 a group of female students at Spelman College, who were not at all happy with Nelly’s “Tip Drill” Music Video protested the bone marrow drive and concert by Nelly there by causing it’s cancellation. According to the story in Atlanta Journal-Constitution during that time:

The drive, and the concert by Nelly to promote the drive were indeed cancelled.

“We care about the cause and we understand that the need for bone marrow is so great within the minority community,” explained Asha Jennings to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She is president of the Spelman Student Government Association and coordinator of the drive. “However, we can’t continue to support artists and images that exploit our women and put us out there as oversexed, non-intelligent human beings.”

The cancellation of the bone marrow drive was a shock to members of Nelly’s management group and foundation 4Sho4Kids. The foundation was started to find bone marrow and stem cell donors for Blacks after Nelly’s sister, Jackie Donahue, was diagnosed with leukemia.

A year later, in 2005, Jackie unfortunately lost her battle with cancer. It’s now been eight years since Nelly lost his sister Jackie to leukemia, and the hip hop artist believes that the boycott could have turned away someone who could have potentially saved Jackie’s life.

Nelly recently set down with HuffPost Live’s Marc Lamont to talk about the 2004 incident were he stated he had no problem talking to the girls about the sexually explicit and misogynistic of that video or what people think about his music and videos, but the timing and place he felt was wrong. He continues to state how believes that the boycott could have turned away someone who could have potentially saved Jackie’s life. According to the Hip Hop Star he hasn’t heard a word from the Spelman protesters since the incident and brings into question was the issue really that serious? Check it out leave your thoughts.
