‘Being Mary Jane’ star lands on the cover ESSENCE Magazine’s December issue. Where she speaks on why she was a mean girl and babies.
Styled by June Ambrose, our girl Gabrielle looks radiant in a Bibhu Mohapatra gown and Stella Valle earrings. In the issue she opens up about the emotions that inflamed her past image as a ‘mean girl’.
“There’s this intense desire for us all to be chosen by a man, or a job, or chosen for fame, whatever. But when you’re in the public eye and you’re not chosen, the rejection feels public. So to cover the wound, you attack the person who is chosen.”
Thanks to AJ Johnson, she was able to let go of all the negativity. Gabrielle also revealed to the magazine that she lost the lead role in ‘Jumping The Broom’ to Paula Patton. however director Salim Akli was so impressed with her that he recommended her to Mara Brock Akil for the role of “Mary Jane“. Proving that an incident of “rejection” can lead to a big opportunities.
She also talked about her role as ‘Mary Jane’:
“It would be easy to label Mary Jane a freak…but enjoying sex doesn’t make you a ho. I hope [Being Mary Jane] widens the conversation. I hope people will be more forgiving of those who explore their sexuality unapologetically.”
The highly anticipated new BET series, Being Mary Jane, which launches on January 7.
