In the first significant deadline of Syria’s chemical arms destruction plan, the country has submitted a a declaration of its chemical weapons program and a plan to eliminate them to the world’s chemical weapons watchdog, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The projected timeline for the destruction of the country’s chemical weapons production and mixing equipment is expected for November 1, while materials for the production of chemical arms to be handled by June of next year.

Although exact details of Syria’s arsenal was not given, it is estimated around 1,000 metric tons of chemical agents. The removal of Syria’s chemical weapons comes after more than 1,400 people were killed near Damascus in August due to a sarin gas attack.
