Iraqi Executes 42 ‘Terrorists’, Including Woman, As Violence Worsens [Photo]
Iraq executed 42 people for mass killings and other “terrorism” offenses on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, the justice ministry and the United Nations said on Thursday after a surge in sectarian violence in recent weeks between the Shi’ite-led government and Iraq’s Sunni Muslim minority. The U.N. mission in the country has called for Iraq’s capital of Baghdad to suspend the death penalty amid concerns from human rights group that executions are on the rise in recent years. Sixty-eight death sentences were carried out in 2011, according to Amnesty International, making the 42 hanged this week almost a third of the total number the campaign group says were executed in all of last year. The religious affiliation, nor the names of the deceased were announced.
