Azerbaijan Announces Presidential Election Winner — Day Before Vote [Photo]
The smartphone app of Azerbaijan’s Central Election Commission released the results of Wednesday’s presidential election, showing President Ilham Aliyev as the victor with an overwhelming 73 percent win. Ilham has long been posed to take control of the nation following in his father’s footsteps, Geidar Aliyev, who led Azerbaijan for the better part of the last three decades. In response the commission explained the gaffe by saying that a software developer had released the figures as a “test” at one polling station.
The official poll results released on Thursday show Aliyev winning with a landslide, nearly 85 percent of the vote. Monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe called the vote flawed, but critics of the government are not necessarily welcome as booming oil prices have tripled the country’s economy and trickled down to even the most of the nation’s poverty stricken citizens.
