In an effort to ease tensions between India and Pakistan, the prime ministers from both countries met in New York on Sunday and agreed on the need to stop the recent series of attacks in the disputed Kashmir region. Known to have strained relations, the relationship between the two countries reached a low point following the 2008 Mumbai, India attacks that were blamed on Pakistan-based militants and resulted in the deaths of 164 people.

The two prime ministers seemed to have a similar stance when it came to the contentious so-called Line of Control at the Kashmir border where there have been repeated cease-fire violations and “agreed that the pre-conditions for forward movement in the relationship which they both desire is an improvement of the situation on the Line of Control.” However, both parties agree that more steps remain to be taken forward in the next few months.
