Yemen Minister On Child Marriage After Death of 8-Year-Old Girl: “Enough Is Enough” [Photo]
Yemen’s human rights minister, Hooria Mashhour, has called for the outlawing of child marriage after the death of an 8-year-old girl reportedly due to internal injuries that she suffered on her wedding night at the hands of a 40-year-old man. Outrage on the international scale has been widespread, as the alleged incident once again highlights Yemen’s extremely controversial legal practice of child marriage. Local officials, however, have denied the story is true. Even the victim’s father went to the police station and denied the story, bringing another little girl and claiming her as his child.
“I personally have (talked to) the human rights coordinator for the ministry on the ground in Haradh,” said Mashhour, “and he informed me that nearly everyone he spoke to is denying the story, but he feels strongly suspicious.”
“No one is talking about this story because its an embarrassment,” said one resident speaking in anonymity, “but this is what poverty can do to people.”
According to rights group Human Rights Watch, more than half of all young girls in Yemen are married before age 18.
