Grand Theft Auto 5 Steals The Title of Best Selling Game of All Time
If you haven’t been living under a rock this week you might have heard about a little video game released on Tuesday called Grand Theft Auto 5. The flagship franchise of critically acclaimed developer Rockstar Games has come back after 5 years with a vengeance. It has destroyed the record for highest day one profit pulling in over $800 million in the first 24 hours of release. The previous record was held by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 which sold $500 million in the same time frame. GTA 5 managed to hit the $1 Billion mark by day 3, where as COD: BO 2 took around 15 days. Grand Theft Auto 5 might actually be the most profitable entertainment product released ever, including movies and music, and this is only its first week.
In addition to breaking sales records GTA 5 looks to currently be considered the highest rated video game ever. Countless video game and mainstream news outlets have reviewed the title and perfect scores have been dolled out like Halloween candy. The review score aggregation website Metacritic currently shows GTA 5 with a score of 98% after averaging the scores from 40 review outlets. This metacritic score actually ties GTA 5 unsurprisingly with its previous release GTA 4.
All this fanfare over a single player only game, but the online component titled GTA Online will be releasing Oct 1st as a free download for owners of the game so expect to keep hearing more about Grand Theft Auto for a while.
