Wave of Bombings Kill At Least 47 in Iraq [Photo]
A series of coordinated bomb blasts in Baghdad killed at least 47 people on Tuesday in the latest wave of attacks amid a surge of bloodshed roiling the country this year. The attacks happened in the early evening targeting civilians that were out shopping or heading to dinner. The last few months have seen a stark increase as insurgents try to capitalize on rising sectarian and ethnic tensions. No party has come forward and claimed responsibility for the attacks but synchronized bombings are a notorious tactic of the Iraqi branch of al-Qaida who typically do not lay claim for their attacks. According to figures provided by the United Nations, bloodshed between the Shiites and Sunnis have claimed the lives of more than 4,000 people in the last five months, including 804 Iraqis killed just last month alone.
