U.N. Presses Australia To Release 46 Refugees [Photo]
The above picture highlights the coast of Christmas Island in Australia where 46 refugees arrived between March 2009 and December 2010. The 46 refugees, comprised of 2 Tamils from Sri Lanka, three Rohingya from Myanmar and a Kuwaiti, are being contained indefinitely by Australian authorities who deem the refugees a security threat. The U.N. has condemned the actions of the Australian government calling the refugee’s detention “cruel, inhumane and degrading” and in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The refugees reached out to the human rights committee in 2011 and 2012 on the grounds that they were unable to challenge the legality of their detention in Australian courts. Only seven refugees have since been granted Australian visas and freed.
