Africa and Pakistan Face Polio Outbreaks [Photo]
On the brink of extinction for years, the polio virus has resurged in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, in addition to a new outbreak in a region of Pakistan a warlord had previously declared off limits to vaccinators over a year ago. The African outbreak began in May where there are now 121 cases in contrast to 223 cases found in the entire world last year. In an effort to prevent the polio outbreak from reaching Mecca during next month’s hajj, Saudi Arabia will require pilgrims traveling from countries with known polio cases to have vaccinations both at home and upon arrival in the country. In Somalia, part of the polio problems deals with militant group Shabab who oppose mass campaigns believing the efforts of vaccinators would undermine the group’s control.
