Mexico Gulf Cartel Leader Captured [Photo]
Top drug cartel leader Mario Ramirez-Trevino, also known as Mario Pelon, wanted by the U.S. since 2008 was arrested in Mexico on Saturday. Ramirez-Trevino, 51, was arrested at his house in northern Mexico between Rio Bravo and border city Reynosa situated across from McAllen, Texas. Ramirez-Trevino had been vying to take control of the Mexican Gulf Cartel since last September’s arrest of former Gulf leader, Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sanchez. The Gulf Cartel had been plagued by internal strife since Costilla’s arrest. In the ensuing succession struggle, the cartel split into two opposing factions—those loyal to Costilla and those loyal to former boss Osiel Cardenas Guillen, extradited to the U.S. in 2007 and serving a 25-year incarceration in California. The split is blamed for much of the violence Reynosa has experienced in the past six months including regular public shootouts.
