Russia Readies Tighter Customs If Ukraine Signs EU Deal [Photo]
An aide to President Vladimir Putin was quoted on Sunday as saying that Russia plans on stricter customs regulations with Ukraine in the event that Ukraine’s capital Kiev makes the “suicidal” move of entering an association agreement with the European Union. Last week Russia imposed new tedious checks on all Ukrainian cargo as Putin continues to mount pressure on Kiev to join the Moscow-led Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Sergei Glazev, an adviser to President Putin on developing the trade union, said the newly imposed additional checks to Ukranian cargo are only temporary but will continue should Kiev enter the EU. This places substantial tension on Ukraine seeing as how Russia is the largest consumer of Ukrainian exports and continued cargo restrictions would undoubtedly rock the country’s economy.
