New Mammal Species Discovered [Photo]

Scientists at the the Smithsonian in Washington announced the discovery of a new mammal species on Thursday called the olinguito (pronounced oh-lin-GHEE-toe). The discovery marks the first carnivorous mammal species identified in 35 years. A primarily nocturnal animal, the 2 pound olinguito feeds mostly on fruits in addition to occasionally dining on nectar and insects. Closely related to their larger sister species of olingos, scientists had overlooked the animal’s uniqueness in “a case of mistaken identity.” Although the creature had previously been captive in zoos, its natural habitat consists of high-elevation homes in Colombia and Ecuador.
