30 Dead in Nigerian Slaughter [Photo]
30 people were murdered on Sunday morning in Kogunda, a farming region in northeast Nigeria, where the Islamist sect Boko Haram is active. Dressed in military camouflage, the men ambushed people and both shot and hacked away at dozens of Muslims returning back home from morning prayers. The Islamist sect Boko Haram wishes to impose sharia law, the moral code and religious law of Islam, in Nigeria’s north.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in mid-May and launched an offensive against Boko Haram’s stronghold in the northeast. However, the fight is far from over as the group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, dictated in a video on Monday saying, “We have killed countless soldiers and we are going to kill more…We can now comfortably confront the United States of America.”
