6.5-Magnitude Quake Strikes New Zealand [Photo]

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand on Friday afternoon with luckily no reports of serious damage. Train services in an out of the country’s capital Wellington were halted with many people leaving on foot and by vehicle creating congestion. Although a series of aftershocks occurred, no imminent threat of an ensuing tsunami developed. New Zealand is situated at the southwestern edge of the Pacific “ring of fire,” an area where a large number of seismic activity and volcanic eruptions occur. Overall the damage experienced was minor stated Vince Cholewa, a spokesman for the civil defense ministry, with only plaster loss in buildings and newly formed wall cracks.
