South Africa Closes 16 Schools Amid Gang Violence [Photo]
Gang violence in South Africa in an impoverished area near Cape Town has led to the closing of 16 schools affecting around 12,000 students. Even with increased police involvement, school officials and educators have been too fearful to venture out to their schools. Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, leader of the Democratic Alliance party which controls the provincial government, stated that she had written to President Jacob Zuma asked for military involvement but has not received any kind of recourse whatsoever from the federal government. However, Zweli Mnisi, a spokesman for South Africa’s police minister, opposed Zille’s idea of army involvement instead calling for communities and individuals to integrate their approach to the problem.
