Russia Accused of Trade War Against Ukraine [Photo]
Ukrainian politicians have accused Russia of initiating a trade war against the country in an attempt to prevent Ukraine from entering a free-trade deal with the EU come November. New restrictions on Ukrainian products that Moscow has enforced this week have left a multitude of trains and trucks halted at the Russia/Ukraine border. Moscow has not been in support of the nation’s desire to lessen its dependence on Russian natural gas imports and integrate economically and politically with the European Union. Wary of openly criticizing Russia, Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of essentially bullying Ukraine into joining the Customs Union, a Moscow-led economic alliance, and deterring them from signing a free-trade deal with the EU; Russian President Vladimir Putin has stressed that Russia should be Ukraine’s closest ally.
