Unequal Paycheck Inspired Oprah to Take a Professional Risk [Video]
Some things haven’t changed much since the 80’s. In a recent video presented by Ultraviolet, a women’s right community fighting sexism, media proprietor Oprah Winfrey spoke on being subjected to unequal pay due to her gender in 1980.
The television show co-anchor received a salary of $22,000 meanwhile her male co-anchor received $55,000. Although that was the turning point for Oprah, who has risen billionaire status, women as whole in the United States makes 77 cents for every dollar a man makes.
Despite the pay gap and evidence that we need better laws to address pay discrimination, the problem continues.
In the clip below Oprah explains what it’s like to face pay discrimination:
‘That moment in the office, that was a deciding factor for me. I came back and said look I want to own my show and I want to take the risk of owning my own show. So that I can be the one to say who gets what paycheck.’
