Dominic Smith NY Mets

“I’m trying to come to the Mets and bring everything to the table,” said Smith, whose mother Yvette was born in Queens and grew up in The Bronx. “I want to bring my hitting ability, I want to bring my fielding ability. I want to become a leader one day.” – nypost

The 17-year-old is considered one of the best high school bats in the draft. Tommy Tanous, the Mets’ director of amateur scouting, compared him to a young Rafael Palmeiro or Will Clark.

“We felt going back to last spring, into the summer, that this was one of the most advanced high school hitters that you’ll find,” Tanous said. “The fact that he bats lefthanded is even nicer. You don’t find a swing like this every year.

“We feel like we put a very offensive player and defensive player into the system. I’ve been scouting 18 years. I don’t think I’ve seen a first baseman play as an amateur that plays this kind of defense. This is a well-rounded player it’s hit and power and it’s a middle-of-the-order bat.” – nydailynews

Darryl Strawberry excited with pick

“He’s 17 years old, he’s got a lot to learn about the game,” Strawberry said. “From all the reports that I hear about him, he’s a pretty good player. That’s good because you wouldn’t be here being taken in the first round if he wasn’t good. Just hopefully he can handle the opportunity of playing in New York because he has to deal with a lot here.

“It’s an exciting time for his family, and I’m just happy for him.” – nydailynews

“This may be the best left-handed bat from Los Angeles since Darryl Strawberry,” analyst and former major leaguer Harold Reynolds said on the MLB Network. – nypost
