OF defensive end David “Deacon” Jones took the NFL by storm in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and even coined the term “sack.” Unfortunately, on Monday night “Deacon” Jones passed away at 74 years of age from natural causes in his Southern California (Anaheim Hills) home. Jones was drafted (168 in the fourth round) in 1961 out of Mississippi Valley State by the LA Rams! He would be a part of the Rams’ “fearsome foursome” including: Merlin Olsen, Rosey Grier and Lamar Lundy during the first 11 seasons of his career. The “first” pass rusher to really put up “sacks” in the NFL would never win a Playoff game, but made it to the Pro-Bowl in seven consecutive seasons (1964-1970) and in 1972. Jones played his remaining couple of years with the San Diego Chargers and the Washington Redskins, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1980. The “sacks” would not become an official NFL stat until the 1982 season, and Jones unofficially collected 173.5 sacks during his career. Although, Jones believed that he tallied up 180.5 during his career. Check out some of the Twitter (love) feedback above! Thatsenuff.com sends condolences to friends and family of David “Deacon” Jones. R.I.P. to the “sack master.”
