Rapper Chris Kelly of the 90s Duo Kris Kross DEAD at 34
34 year-old rapper Chris Kelly, one-half of the 1990s rap duo Kris Kross dies at an Atlanta hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home.
Chris Kelly also known as “Mac Daddy” shot to stardom alongside Chris Smith, known as “Daddy Mac” in 1992 with their single “Jump”. The single spent nearly 8 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100.
The two were discovered by Jermaine Dupri at an Atlanta mall. Their success led to instant fame: they had their own video games, appeared on TV shows and even toured with legendary Michael Jackson.
Cpl. Kay Lester of the Fulton County police said “it appears it may have been a possible drug overdose.”
An official cause of death is pending an autopsy.
We last seen the group performed together to celebrate the anniversary of Dupri’s label, So So Def.
Chris’ mother and The So So Def Family released a joint statement saying:
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”
