Ouch: Former Female College Kicker Says Silberman’s NFL Tryout was ‘Terrible’
“Her performance does not have to do with her gender, it has to do with her experience and her preparation,” Hnida told USA Today. “Unfortunately, what’s going to happen now is she’s going to be looked at (as inferior) because she was female…But she was terrible.”
“It is disappointing,” said Hnida. “I hoped she would go out and do justice for an NFL tryout, because there are lots of people who have dreamed of going to the NFL. It should be something serious.” – nypost
“It’s pretty hard to know that you’d be in pain, and I certainly tried to work through it, but I just couldn’t do it today,” Silberman said. “I know I can do a lot more. It’s too bad that this happened, but I had to do what’s right for my body so I can come out and keep kicking in the future.” – nypost
Katie Hnida, who was the first female kicker to score in an NCAA Division 1-A game in 2003 for Colorado, had some choice words for the Lauren Silberman, the first woman to tryout for the NFL! She basically said that Silberman’s tryout was “terrible,” a bad example for what women are capable, and the NFL shouldn’t grade the experience on her tryout! Silberman paid a $275 entry fee to join, competed against 37 male competitors, and kicked the ball 13 yards and then 19 yards while complaining about pulled quadriceps!
