Joe Johnson’s jumper put the Brooklyn Nets over the top of the NY Knicks, 88-85, in the MLK Jr. Day City Showdown at MSG on Monday afternoon! J.R. Smith missed a last ditch attempt at a three to tie the game and send it into overtime! The Nets (25-16) evened the series with the Knicks, each winning two games apiece (and losing two), and moved one step closer to the Knicks (25-14) battling for first place in the Atlantic East division! The game for the most part was ugly with Knicks missing a lot of shots (40%) and seriously outrebounded (52-37), while the Nets were turning over the ball (19-5) a lot! For the Nets, Joe Johnson was the difference, he finished with 25 points, 10 points in the fourth quarter and the deciding bucket with 22 seconds to go! Johnson also shut down Melo in the fourth quarter forcing him to miss all six shots! On a positive, Melo finished with a season-high seven assists connecting with Stat who finished well! Nets’ D-Will had made 52 consecutive free-throws before missing one with 6 seconds left to allow the Knicks one last attempt to tie with a three! Statistics: For the Nets, Joe Johnson finished with 25 points, D-Will had 14 points and 12 assists, Brook Lopez had 14 points and 11 boards, and Kris Humphries finished with 11 points and 13 boards!

For the Knicks, Melo finished with 29 points and a season-high seven assists, but shot 11 for 29 for the game, and missed all six shots in the fourth quarter! J.R. Smith connected with 16 points (on 7 of 19 shooting), Stat showed up with 15 points, Tyson Chandler snagged 11 boards, and Jason Kidd finished with 11 points and a season-high six steals!
