New Orleans Hornets to Become Pelicans?!
“It’s definitely an interest down the road, but right now it’s the New Orleans Hornets,” Michael Jordan told the Charlotte Observer. “We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That’s as much as we can say right now. We’ve heard the community ask the question, and we would listen.” – espn
According to a Yahoo Sports report, the New Orleans Hornets will change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans by as early as the 2013-14 NBA season! The MJ owned Charlotte Bobcats will become the the Charlotte Hornets once again! MJ was vying for the switch (in November) to get the Hornets name back to Charlotte (quote and pic above)! When the league expanded in 2002, the Charlotte Hornets switched to the Bobcats, and gave up the Hornets name to the Big Easy! The change came about (so quickly) because the New Orleans Saints’ owner Tom Benson purchased the team in April, and owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname.
The Pelican is the Louisiana state bird, and appears on both the state seal and flag (pic above). A New Orleans minor league baseball team held the Pelicans name in all but nine seasons from 1887-1959, and again in 1977.
