R.I.P. Macho [Video]
Sugar Ray Leonard use to call Macho the ‘Liberace of Boxing’.
“Hector’s toughest fights were always outside of the ring. Hector’s style and persona was that he was always staring death in the face,” said Sugar Ray Leonard. “But (Camacho’s death) is something that I never thought in a million years that I’d ever hear.” – nydailynews
“He excited boxing fans around the world with his inimitable style,” promoter Don King told The Associated Press.
“He revolutionized boxing, Chavez said. “It’s a shame he got mixed up in so many problems.” - nypost
R.I.P. P.R. Hector “Macho” Camacho was a legend in the ring, speedy and flamboyant, and led the crowd with cheers of “It’s Macho time!” before every fight! He passed away (at 50 years old) Saturday due to complications from a recent shooting. Macho put Puerto Rico on the map, and lit up opponents with his quick hands and feet! He held the super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980′s; fighting the likes of Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Sugar Ray Leonard! Macho in his prime squared off against Sugar Ray Leonard on March 1, 1997 [Video]! It would be Sugar Ray Leonard’s last fight, and pretty much the same for Macho! Macho retired with a 79-6-3 record, and helped pave the way for boxers in Puerto Rico! Check out Macho highlights (at 3:20 minute mark) on the Fastest Boxers of All-time video below!
