The NY Yankees have set up a special ceremony to remember the victims, salute the volunteers of 9/11, and honor soldiers of the Afghanistan war that followed! It has now been 10 years since that horrific day in NY. The ceremony is set to take place on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 before the beginning of the home game (around 12:30PM EST) against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees will be away during the actual 9/11 date. For full details, check out the excerpt below!
During the ceremony, the Yankees will recognize Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry, who was presented the Congressional Medal of Honor on July 12, 2011. He became the second living recipient of the award for actions occurring since the Vietnam War, distinguishing himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in the vicinity of Paktya Province, Afghanistan, on May 26, 2008.
Petry will be throwing the ceremonial first pitch along with Yankees employee Hank Grazioso, who lost both of his sons in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
Additionally, Wounded Warriors from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Ft. Belvoir in Virginia will be on the field during the pregame ceremony, escorted by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
Official FDNY Vocalist Regina Wilson, from Engine Company 219, will sing the national anthem and Official FDNY Vocalist Frank Pizarro, from Engine Company 76, will perform “God Bless America.” The FDNY Honor Guard will present the colors. – espn
