Missy Speaks on her Battle with Graves Disease
The 39-year-old rapper we know as Missy Elliot has been MIA from the music scene for a few years now due to being diagnosed Graves’ disease, the most common form of hyperthyroidism. This autoimmundisorder is not curable.
She recently reflected on her experiences saying: “I was (driving and) trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn’t keep the brake down and almost crashed… I couldn’t write because my nervous system was so bad – I couldn’t even use a pen.”
And we all know how great of a songwriter Missy is. I can’t imagine how hard it was, emotionally, for her to not be able to write.
She also had mood swiings and hair loss that subsided when she went through radiation.
You will see her speak in depth about her struggle on Behind The Music on June 29th.
The show’s executive producer Brad Abramson said about it at the time of taping:
“Missy was great and very candid. She talked for the first time about her [near fatal bout with] Graves disease, which she’s been battling for the last few years, and spoke in detail about the sexual abuse she experienced as a child.”
Today Missy is healthier, although she still lives with the disease. She’s even back in the studio.
She said, “I’m 30 pounds lighter because I’ve been exercising. My thyroid is functioning, so I haven’t had to take medication in about nine months. (But) you live with it for the rest of your life.”
