’40-Year-Old Virgin’ Actor Gets Life in Prison

(via CNN newswire)

    — Five years after cracking up audiences as an electronics store clerk in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” actor Shelley Malil learned his fate Friday after his conviction for repeatedly stabbing his former girlfriend.
San Diego, California, County Superior Court Judge Harry Elias sentenced Malil to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
He was charged in August 2008 in North County, California, with repeatedly stabbing Kendra Beebe. Two years later, a California jury found Malil guilty of premeditated attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He was found not guilty of burglary.
On Friday, the victim urged the judge to prosecute Malil to the fullest extent, saying she was fortunate to have survived his attack.
“I stand before the defendant today alive, despite plunging a butcher knife into my body 23 times in an attempt to murder me. I am here,” Kendra Beebe said.
The Indian-born actor had testified that he stabbed his girlfriend by mistake, thinking he was defending her. On Friday, he apologized in court.
“For what I did to Kendra, I don’t even have the words to express my remorse or my felling sorry. Kendra Beebe did not deserve anything that happened to her,” Malil said.
Malil’s 19-year-old niece, Anjali Varghese, testified at Friday’s sentencing hearing that her uncle’s “crime was not a result of any kind of ingrained malice, because that’s not his nature.”
According to the Internet Movie Database, Malil has appeared in at least 54 movies and television projects over the past decade. That includes frequently aired Budweiser commercials and appearances in shows such as “Scrubs” and “Reba,” as well as his break-out role as Steve Carell’s co-worker Haziz in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”
