Wyclef Jean Received Death Threats During Presidential Run
After the tragedy that happened in Haiti due to an earthquake, Wyclef Jean ran for President in hopes of rebuilding his native country. There was a lot of media backlash during that time and many celebrities spoke out on thier feelings towards Wyclef’s decision to run for office considering he has no previous political experience.
Wyclef stated: “After the earthquake I was like, I have to do something different for this country,” Jean explained. “I said, ‘I can’t just keep singing.’ I felt that, if I ran for president, there would be too many eyes on the country for even the most corrupt to break the law. And in that aspect, I was wrong, because I got kicked out of the race before even running.”
But before anything happened Haiti’s electoral council said that Wyclef was ineligible to run for Presidency.
“The law doesn’t say you have to sit there in the country for five years,” he added. “In that case, 90% of the parliament would have to be ousted.”
Wycelf said he was set up by departing Haitian President René Préval and the electoral council so that Jude Célestin could win the election. He also stated that he received many death threats during and following the whole situation. (HipHopDX)
