ThatsEnuff PSA: World AIDS Day
Today is World AIDS Day, an annual day of awareness to help stop the spread of HIV worldwide. This day holds an immeasurable amount of significance that I believe every day should hold.
The statistics say it all. In 2009, there were 33.3 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, according to Avert. 2.6 million of those were new cases and in that same year, 1.8 million people died of the disease.
This year, many celebrities like Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and Kim Kardashian have found new and innovative ways of sending messages through the media and social networks that AIDS is prevalent, now more than ever.
I’d like to go the traditional route in saying, Wrap it up!
Safe sex is not just about preventing an unwanted pregnancy. Safe sex is about saving your life.
Many sexually active people make excuses as to why they don’t use condoms:
“Condoms are too expensive,” “There’s never time to put it on,” “It doesn’t feel good” and the list goes on and on. However, all of these excuses don’t matter once you’re infected.
Think about what the condom symbolizes. It symbolizes self-worth as well as respect for the person you are sleeping with.
And if you are in a monogamous sexual relationship where both parties make the choice to stop using condoms, then it’s still important to get tested. It’s more than a matter of trust.
The AIDS epidemic is in our backyard. Too many people have died of this disease. Although medicine has found a way to preserve the lives of those with HIV, just a few decades longer, it is still a lifelong virus that this world can do without.
It is even more important to spread that message to friends, family, and especially teenagers.
Know your partner. Know Their Status. Wrap it Up!
